We compare learning to hiking in class. The first step is to start the journey. There will be twists (new learning), turns (extension and self directed research), steep climbs (new learning can be tough at times), and breezy descents (Where you are confident and own your own knowledge). Just when we reach the top of our mountain , and we are enjoying the view, we spy the many other mountains on our trail. That is ongoing learning. We are always on the path. I am grateful to be on the journey this year with your children.
I'm thrilled to be teaching fifth grade Humanities at Barnwell this year! My teaching experience includes both special education and general education. This will be my 19th year teaching. I have taught in Georgia, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. Our class motto is “Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.” It is my goal to engage students so that they are truly invested and enthusiastic about what they are learning. This means that learning in our class is student centered and customized to fit different learning styles. I believe all students can learn, and it is my goal to help them achieve to their full potential. Twenty first century learners need to use technology as tool for learning. Students in my class will use many different sites and applications to help them achieve a better understanding of the topics and skills they are learning in class. Fifth graders are expected to become responsible learners. To foster this vision, students will develop goals and track their progress on those goals in class. Students are also expected to take ownership of their learning. Students are encouraged to ask questions and be prepared for class with any materials and/or homework. In addition, students will be focused on managing their educational tools and resources and learning valuable time management skills. Learning is a journey. We relate learning to hiking in class. It has twists (new material, deeper learning), turns (new directions in self guided research) , steep climbs (learning can be a struggle at times) and breezy descents.(The "I've got it" moments where you can truly reflect on learning). However at the end you reach the top of your mountain. Just as you enjoy the view and celebrate your growth...you see the rest of the mountains ready to be climbed! That is ongoing learning. We are all somewhere on the trail. I'm so grateful to be on the trail with your children this year! Although this year will be starting unlike any other year with Remote Learning, it is my goal to create a strong classroom community and to engage every learner in my class.
